St. Francis of Assisi, born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone, but nicknamed Francesco - the Frenchman - by his father, (October 3, 1226) was an Italian Catholic friar and preacher. Francis' father was Pietro di Bernardone, a prosperous silk merchant.
